Something completely different, part one

I'm having trouble logging in and posting using my PC, but I can't post pictures using my Mac (well, I could, but I don't want to bother uploading photos onto it because that's not where they're kept). Thus, I will tell you about my gardening class because it requires no pictures.

Yesterday was the longest day ever. I haven't been sleeping well, since I've been having digestive problems ever since Saturday night, and Tuesday night was no different. Wednesday, I got up, tutored for a couple hours, then prepped for class, taught, then had to find something to do for a couple hours before the gardening class begun. I went shopping, but only managed to buy some kitchen towels.

I was the first person to arrive to the class, and it didn't take me long to realize that I was the youngest person in the class by at least 20 years. Some other young person finally came in, but she was the only one. The instructor came in, and I tried my best not to evaluate him, since, you know, I'm a teacher too. I couldn't help it, though; I mean, instead of passing out the big packet of information, he had all the students crowd up at the front of the room to pick one up.

The class was not what I was hoping for. To be fair, however, he did express that people often felt that way about his class and then proceeded to explain what his class was all about. He teaches a lot of different techniques. Now, if I could just figure out what grows well in this area, how to plant seeds, how big my garden should be, and so on, I'd be all set. In other words, I'm not really at the "finesse" stage of gardening. I'm more in the "I've never done this before" stage. I'm considering trying to get my money back, seeing as how I won't be able to make it to the second class, and for the third class, he has said he's going to be bring in tools and stuff. Again, I don't think I need to concern myself too much with tools just yet.

Despite the problem I have with the material, the class was rather inspiring. One the one hand, this gardening thing is way more complicated than I ever thought, and on the hand, it's pretty simple. Probably half of the "complications" are things that you can't really do a whole lot about anyway. There's no secret formula for growing stuff well. It seems most of it is just trial and error and improvisation. I can deal with that. It was also nice to see how nature takes care of itself. I had no idea until last night that compost was useful.

We got some snow today, so even though I was all pumped to have a go at this gardening business yesterday, today I'm in no hurry.

One other new thing I did this week was booking a cruise! Unfortunately, since we waited so long to make our plans, the cruise we really wanted to take that left out of NYC was full. Now, we have to fly down to Orlando and leave out of Cape Canaveral. Oh, the inconveniences!
